strange substitutions
|
We've had a few strange substitutions this year from Sophisticated Sam as he seeks to out-tacktick opposing managers. I've got to admit though that he caught me totally by surprise with his Cole for Noble and Jarvis for Valencia ones today.
It was almost as of he didn't want to win. Valencia and Noble working their socks off to make it hard for the Ys, and then comes Cole. And Jarvis.
Very strange stuff indeed from the fat man.

Absolutely bizare. No Nolan in the last 2 games when you would of thought Allardyce would put him on. But when he puts 4 defenders on the bench and an out of sorts Jarvis then he doesn't have much option . Why not give some youngsters a chance. I bet they will be chancing at the bit to prove a point... OH WELL

Is he trying to prove a point with his fucking bizarre substitutions these days? Only one today when we're three nil down.

I'd rather Jussi came on on pitch than Cole.

GET IT RIGHT!...
THEY WERE SOPHISTICATED CHANGES THAT HAD A SOPHISTICATED IMPACT ON THE GAME!...
BLOWING A 2-0 LEAD AGAINST ONE OF YOUR BIGGEST RIVALS TO DRAW 2-2 IS SOPHISTICATED STUFF!...
IT WARRANTS SOPHISTICATED APPLAUSE AT THE FINAL WHISTLE!...
THE SPOILS ARE SHARED IN A SOPHISTICATED MANNER!... EVERYONE GOES HOME FEELING CONTENT AND DEEPLY SOPHISTICATED!...
SOPHISTICATION!... DON'T FUCKING KNOCK IT!...

Correct, Hammers.
Nolan shouldn't be starting but as a sub for the last 15 minutes still has a lot to offer. A very puzzling substitution. Looking at the list of subs, he could have used anyone else bar Jussi to better effect.

It was strange the Cole for Noble sub.
I understand the decision to take Noble off, but for Cole?
We all moan about Nolan starting games but I don't think as many of us would of minded him coming on for Noble yesterday. That was the sub that should have been made.
And if he wanted he could still have put Sakho up top on his own and put Enner on the wing to track the full backs. Nolan does actually offer something when coming on fresh I feel, I don't think we would have let the two goals in if that sub had of been made.

Re: strange substitutions

easy with hindsight but i think he wanted valencia and sahko to sit on their fullbacks and cole lead the line so basically a 4-5-1. Nolan offers nothing especially when 2-0 up so it can be reasoned. we just dont seem to have that extra bit to get us over the line. they nicked one in the first game of the season and done it again yesterday. we gotta get over the hump, not panic and see it through. if adrian don't flap like a injured sparrow, we win.

I have to agree with everyone on here. Cole for Noble just defies any logic but then I guess we aren't sophisticated like our manager.
Clearly Noble was a risk but Nolan, Collins, Demel, JOB could have come on and he;lped defend the lead. Perhaps it should have been Poyet, Zarate or Ravel? Ah! Not good enough so shipped out. Poyet isn't good enough to get on the bench but Cole is!
And defending a 2-0 lead we bring on another forward? Of course! SA showing the owners he can be attack minded and look how it goes wrong...

Shame you can't moan about a boring, dull game, negative, defensive subs, or Nolan being played eh?
You're being forced to scrape the barrel a bit with this one.

Where was Poyet by the way? Was he still injured? Would seem to have been the ideal replacement.

Re: strange substitutions

Everyone (including Allardyce) seems to have forgotten that JOB was actually a central midfielder for most of his career before coming to us. Albeit he hasn't played there for a while and I wouldn't want him anywhere near the starting xi in midfield (or anywhere else), it seems odd he wasn't considered an option considering he knows the role presumably to a fairly competent level.

Bang on, to my mind I would have lived with Nolan for Noble but the substitutions mad less sense the longer it went on

Re: strange substitutions

Bringing on Collins for Noble would still have disrupted two parts of the team so is arguably not sensible.
Bringing on JOB for Noble would have been a straight swop.
